We Trek
Today is a groovy day as the first day of Black History month, the New Moon, and Imbolc. Whew! I had to remember to change my season wheel as this Sabbat marks halfway between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. I think winter unofficially ends today in Florida though, as we will be back in the 80s this week.
I want to do what I did last year and honor the remarkable and inherent grooviness that is the Black Woman.
First up is Emily Ford. She is the subject of the documentary, βBreaking Trail,β as the first woman and the first person of color to complete a documented winter-time thru hike of the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. Thatβs a frigid 1200 miles at the pace of 20 miles daily for 69 days! She and her companion Diggins, an Alaskan husky, endured temperatures of -53 windchill. I have to put on socks today just thinking about it. I am thankful for women and stories like these for motivation, encouragement, and inclusivity.
